John Hatch is a Navy veteran and one of the best historical non fiction authors. He enlisted in the US Navy during the Vietnam War and has shared his personal story in A.W.O.L. The book is a thought-provoking, interesting, and historical memoir, and it walks readers through the life of the author. Throughout his life, John has been passionate about writing books, reading poetry, and music. However, his family and societal expectations have compelled him to join the US Navy, and his book tells how his life changed afterwards.
His Navy service began in the Great Lakes Training Center and has also served aboard the USS Yorktown. But all his experiences led him to get disappointed and go A.W.O.L, i.e., Absent Without Leave. His book is full of self-reflections, his anti-war sentiments, and political disbelief. Unlike other historical non fiction authors, he talks about his military service days and personal life. He has also opened up about his emotional and spiritual scars.
This book is full of emotional punches, and it was so refreshing to read a war story that feels like a full-time entertaining read. I got to know about love, John’s regret, and I am in awe of his self-awareness journey. Loved it.
Author John Hatch has surprised me with his A.W.O.L. First of all, it is deeply personal, and I was so heartbroken to read about John’s life, and it will stay with me or longer.
